Land Navigation Course

This course is designed to teach basic land navigation using only a map, compass, and protractor. You will learn the basics of land navigation to include map reading, compass use, reading a protractor, terrain features, reverse azimuth, pace counts, and much more. We have classroom instruction on all the above and then we will actually do a land navigation course during the day and a night navigation course. This is becoming a lost art with all the technology in today’s  world and it is something everyone should know.

Schedule of events:

Day 1: Classroom instruction from 4:00 p.m. until complete.   This is to include all listed above and there will be hands on during this portion also.

Day 2: We will begin at 7:00 a.m. to cover some of the topics we covered to the day before and will continue classes and hands instruction until around 10:30 a.m.

We will start our day land navigation course at 11:00 a.m. and it will last to approximately 5:00 p.m. You will be taken out to a starting point and be required to use the skills we just covered to find your way back to the range. You will have numerous checkpoints to find during this part of the course. You will do the day portion by your self unless myself, one of the other instructors, or you are uncomfortable with it.

We will break from 5:00 to 7:00 and when we return we will start to get ready for the night land navigation course. You will be paired up in twos unless you want to do it by yourself. You will be required to navigate in the darkness and over terrain finding checkpoints through the course and eventually coming to the finishing point.  We should be complete around sometime during the night hours.

There is no need to worry about getting lost. If you pay attention in the classes you will do fine. All courses will be blocked in so you can find an easy escape point if you do get turned around. There will be a medic on hand during the courses and there will be plenty of people helping with the course that has experience in this field.

You will need to bring some means of transporting water(mandatory) and food(if desired) for the courses. You will need to have proper footwear and clothing for this. No shorts allowed and some kind of walking shoes or boots. You will need to bring a good working compass, protractor, notepads, pencils, flashlights, extra batteries, and a cell phone.  Maps will be furnished.

This will be a fun and informing course on a subject that everyone needs to know.

All the instructors have had formal training on land navigation and were instructors in the military.
